Barclay is a Professor of Reading and former department chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Western Illinois University where she has taught for over twenty years. She is author of ISBE's Meeting the Challenge: Professional Development in Reading series, and co-co-authored the Illinois Reading First Professional Development Modules for grades K-3. Sallee Beneke is currently an Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Education at St. Ambrose University. Sallee received her PhD in Special Education from the University of Illinois. Sallee has been a Resource Specialist for STARnet, Kindergarten teacher, director of a lab school, college instructor, master teacher, prekindergarten at-risk teacher, early childhood special education teacher, and childcare center director. Sallee has authored or co-authored books and published articles on the Project Approach, documentation of children’s learning, science and oral language development, and calendar time in early childhood classrooms.

Katz is Professor Emerita of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and is currently Co-Director of ERIC, Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education at the University of Illinois. She is a Past President of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and the first President of the Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children. Katz is Editor of the first on-line peer reviewed bilingual early childhood journal, Early Childhood Research & Practice.Professor Katz is author of more than one hundred publications including articles, chapters, and books about early childhood education, teacher education, child development, and parenting of young children. For thirteen years she wrote a monthly column for parents of three- and four-year-olds forParents Magazine.

Katz was founding editor of theEarly Childhood Research Quarterly, and served as Editor-in-Chief during its first six years. Her most recent book (co-authored with J. Helm) isYoung Investigators: The Project Approach in the Early Years. Her book titledTalks with Teachers of Young Children (1995) is a collection of her best known early essays and several more recent ones.

In 2000 she published the second edition ofEngaging Children's Minds: The Project Approach, co-authored with S. It has been translated into several languages, as have many of her other works.Dr. Katz has lectured in all 50 US states and in 54 countries. She has held visiting posts at universities in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, India, Israel, the West Indies (Barbados campus) and many parts of the USA. Katz is the recipient of many honors, including two Fulbright Awards (India & New Zealand), an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree (DLitt.) from Whittier College, Whittier, California and an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Goteborg in Sweden. In 1997 she served as Nehru Professor at the University of Baroda in India.

With her classroom experience in play-based curriculum and authentic assessment, a Masters Degree from Pacific Oaks College specializing in adult learning and early childhood education, and her extensive experience as a staff development specialist, she helps others truly understand and implement best practices for young children. Began her career teaching first grade then taught 4 year olds, directed, and designed early childhood programs and trained teachers. She served on the Task Force for the design of the Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center eventually becoming Professional Development Coordinator for the school. She assists early childhood and elementary schools in integrating research and new methods through her consulting and training company, Best Practices, Inc.
